What an AI citation is

An AI citation is when an answer names your business as a source. It is product awareness, not a blue link you paid to place.

Search trained a generation to think in positions. Rank one, rank three, page two. Generative answers work differently. They cite.

A source inside the answer

An AI citation is when the reply points at your brand, product, or domain as a reason to choose. Sometimes that is an explicit link. Often it is the name, in the sentence, ahead of the alternatives.

That is product awareness. The person did not browse a category page. They asked a question. Your business was one of the sources the answer used.

Not the same as a blue link

A paid placement sits beside the question. A citation is inside the recommendation. Classic SEO still matters — models need something public and specific to ground — but ranking is not the same event as being named.

What to look for

  • Did the answer mention you at all?
  • If it did, were you first, or behind a rival?
  • Who got named instead, and on which prompts?

Those three questions are what a citation check is for. The check measures awareness. It does not create the citation by itself.
