Title tags still matter in the age of AI Overviews
Google rewrites titles and AI Overviews change the SERP — but title tags still shape crawlers, snippets, and how models interpret your page. What to do now.
Title tags are unglamorous. They still do work.
Even when Google rewrites a large share of titles, and even when AI Overviews sit above the links, titles help crawlers, users, and models understand the page topic.
Modern title rules
- Lead with the primary intent (not a clever riddle)
- Include the brand when recognition matters
- Keep length honest — stuffing still looks like stuffing
- Match the H1 closely enough that the page feels coherent
- Prefer clarity over cleverness for category and comparison pages
Deep dives on title craft (such as Neil Patel’s title tag guidance) remain useful. Pair them with an AI-era check: if this page were cited in an Overview, would the title claim still be accurate?
Where titles meet AEO
A page titled “Solutions” will not win “best X for Y.” A page titled “AI citation tracking for SaaS marketers | AppTime Cite” gives both humans and models a handle.
Next step
Audit your money pages’ titles, then audit whether those pages ever appear in AI answers. Fix both.
